The origins of the Kłodawa salt mine date back to 1949. The rock salt and magnesium-potassium deposit discovered there is considered to this day the largest discovered in our country. The mine from which the salt is extracted extends over a length of 26 kilometers and is up to two kilometers wide. Kłodawa salt is classified as natural rock salt and is mined using traditional mining methods. This preserves as many minerals as possible. The commercially available Kłodawa salt is usually mechanically crushed. It is available in various varieties and colors. It turns out that the color of Kłodawa salt can be pink, snow-white, light gray, or grayish. The color of the product depends primarily on its intended use and the time elapsed from the extraction of the salt until its arrival as a finished product on the store shelves.
The Kłodawa salt consists of more than 97% sodium chloride (NaCl). In contrast, about 1.5% of this product consists of minerals such as magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, manganese, copper, and selenium. The remainder of the composition consists of potassium iodide and water. Studies also indicate the presence of trace amounts of iodine in this product. Despite the minerals valuable for health, the salt should be used in a dose that does not exceed the recommendations of the Polish Institute of Food and Nutrition. This means that we should not consume more than about 4 grams of this product (a level teaspoon) per day. At the same time, it should be considered that most products we consume daily (e.g., ham, cheese, processed vegetables) also contain considerable amounts of salt, which should be included in the daily balance of the consumption of this ingredient.
Salt is an essential component for maintaining normal water-electrolyte and acid-base balance in the human body. Furthermore, both sodium cations and chloride anions influence the smooth functioning of the nervous and digestive systems. Sodium is responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid, which is involved in protein digestion and the formation of the antibacterial barrier. It is also important to know that both an excess and a deficiency of salt in the daily diet negatively affect human functioning. Deficiency symptoms include weakness, nausea up to vomiting, loss of appetite, and disorientation. Additionally, the trace amounts of iodine contained in Kłodawa salt have a positive effect on the function of the thyroid gland. However, it should be considered that an excess of this component (which is diagnosed much more frequently nowadays) can lead to serious consequences. Therefore, it is essential to follow the recommendations of the IŻŻ or (in some cases) the attending physician and/or clinical dietitian regarding the consumption of this product.
Kłodawa salt is gaining increasing attention among health and nutrition experts. Apparently, this product extracted in the Greater Poland region is characterized by a somewhat higher mineral content than conventional table salt. Furthermore, Kłodawa salt is often compared to Himalayan salt, which is considered by many to be the healthiest salt in the world. According to experts, incorporating Kłodawa salt within a healthy diet and active lifestyle, in a dose that does not exceed the established recommendations, can positively influence the functioning of the human body.

Kłodawa salt can be successfully used in the home kitchen as a replacement for conventional salt. It can be added to whole vegetable salads, vegetable preserves, and sauces. However, it is worth knowing that Kłodawa salt is also very useful for home beauty care. A small amount added to a bath provides a relaxing feeling. And if we soak our feet in water with the addition of Kłodawa salt, it helps us combat calloused epidermis and cleanse our skin of an excess of harmful fungi and bacteria that we often encounter in the swimming pool or gym.
