Holidays that don’t make you fat – what should you eat on the holidays?
Christmas is certainly a time of great culinary temptations. It's not hard to dream about the taste of your favorite Christmas Eve dishes, and the family cooks and their assistants will likely do their best to ensure we don't leave the table too quickly.
On top of that, we're battling the December weather and the numerous responsibilities imposed on us towards the end of the year, and we long for that moment when we experience that feeling of Christmas bliss and satiety. In such a situation, maintaining weight over the Christmas season seems almost impossible. Today, however, we'd like to suggest a few ideas to help you prepare for the holidays in a way that doesn't lose its appeal and doesn't trigger feelings of satiety.
First: a good plan
Aside from the religious dimension, which can vary depending on faith, Christmas is rooted in the idea of sharing joy with our loved ones. The celebration, prepared together, is meant to brighten the darkness of a December night and bring hope and peace. Let's keep this in mind as we begin our Christmas preparations.
Sometimes less is better, and it's important to sit down on Christmas Eve in a good mood. Therefore, we shouldn't overdo it with the number and creativity of the dishes. All you have to do is prepare your favorite dish that you can't imagine Christmas without, and the table will be filled with delicacies. It's worth sharing responsibilities and planning everything in advance. Nothing kills the joy more than being part of the holiday hustle and bustle. If we already know which dishes we'll definitely prepare, it's worth considering balancing additions and sharing our plan with the rest of the household.
Second: Use traditions wisely
When choosing Christmas recipes, it's worth considering your needs and finding among the possible options those that will appeal not only to your palate but also to your health. A favorable circumstance is that traditional Christmas Eve dishes are Lenten dishes. Therefore, you can cook Christmas borscht or another favorite soup in a light broth, and replace fried carp with its baked or steamed version. When shopping, make sure the fish is not too fatty. Don't forget the beneficial effects of dried fruit compote. When planning meals for the rest of the holidays, you can focus on healthy game or poultry and include healthy vegetable side dishes. We can't do without sweets during the holidays, but even here we have a wide selection.
Third: Keep your balance
Festive feasting can be alternated with other, slightly healthier indulgences. A walk or some family fun outdoors can offset the slightly higher calorie consumption during this time of year. It's also worth practicing moderation—a second slice of cake doesn't have to be necessary to feel full and blissful. Above all, we should avoid forcing ourselves to eat to avoid wasting food. It's worth knowing in advance what we'll do with leftover Christmas meals so that the thought of throwing them away doesn't motivate us to overeat. A good plan helps with everything!
The most important thing is that the holidays are a time of joy and relaxation for us. Remember: Even if we don't keep our resolution to organize them in a healthier way, we can easily make up for it in the future. Let nothing disturb us during this time—that's our wish for all our readers!
