Herbal honey – how does it differ from honey and what properties does it have?
Contents:
Herbal honey is a group of bee products. Although they are similar to regular honey, they differ in the way they are made. A necessary prerequisite for the production of traditional honey is that the bees feed on nectar, i.e., plants that produce nectar and pollen that occur naturally in nature (nectar, honeydew). Herbal honey, on the other hand, is produced by bees fed on herbal mixtures prepared and formulated by humans. For the production of herbal honey, plants that do not contain honeydew and those that do not produce nectar are usually selected. Under natural conditions, bees cannot use these plants for honey production. Therefore, beekeepers make special syrups by combining herbs with sugar. Bees preserve this herbal mixture and, with the help of enzymes, break down the sucrose from the syrup into sugar. This is how the bees process the syrup to provide them with food and supplies for the winter.
What health benefits does herbal honey have?
The composition of herbal honeys can be even richer than that of honeydew honey, as they also contain active ingredients from herbs, vitamins, and micro- and macroelements. The properties of individual herbal honeys can vary depending on which herbs were used to create the bee mixture. Hawthorn herbal honey strengthens the heart, while aloe has a positive effect on the digestive and immune systems. Both traditional honey and herbal honey have properties that are extremely valuable for our health, and herbal honey contains ingredients from medicinal herbs in addition to the health-promoting properties of regular honey. By combining honey with the properties of herbs, herbal honey:
- antibacterial,
- antifungal,
- strengthens immunity.
What types of herbal honey are there?
Types of herbal honey vary depending on the herbs used to make the syrup, which serves as food for the bees. It can be herbal honey:
- Nettle – facilitates digestion, cleanses the body of toxins and has a diuretic effect,
- Thyme – supports the respiratory tract, has expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties,
- Aloe – improves intestinal function, cleanses the body, regulates the metabolic process,
- Hawthorn – strengthens the heart and supports the circulatory system,
- Aronia herbal honey – helps to lower blood pressure, supports eyesight,
- Raspberry – supports the body in reducing fever, fighting flu and colds, also helps with reduced immunity or a tendency to conjunctivitis, also has an expectorant effect,
- Pine herb honey – this type of herbal honey helps with upper respiratory tract infections, laryngitis, and pharyngitis, and also has expectorant properties. It will help us fight flu and colds. Consuming herbal honey is beneficial for rheumatic diseases; it also has diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Thyme – has properties that support the body in cases of infectious diseases, weak immunity, or general weakness. It helps with urinary tract and bladder infections, strengthens us against tuberculosis, lymphadenitis, as well as flu, colds, and sinusitis.
- Lemon balm – Lemon balm herbal honey is recommended for both adults and children over one year of age with intestinal problems. It helps with digestive disorders caused by neuroses or inflammation of the body (sinuses and joints).
There are as many types of these bee products as there are traditional honey varieties, and each is a valuable product that supports our bodies in different ways. Herbal honey takes the form of a thick, viscous syrup that can be consumed with a spoon like any other syrup, or you can dilute a teaspoon of herbal honey in a glass of boiled and cooled water. Regular consumption of herbal honey naturally supports our bodies, strengthens the immune system, and improves overall well-being. It can be used by both adults and children, except for those who are allergic to bee products or certain herbs.
