Although modern science does not provide conclusive conclusions about the origin of mumio, it is known to be formed in a similar way to coal—through long-term transformations of plant material (mainly algae and mountain lichens) exposed to fluctuations in temperature and pressure, as well as the influence of microorganisms. This substance occurs naturally in various regions of the Himalayas. Depending on the place of extraction, its composition and properties vary. Due to the region of occurrence, mumio (or mummies or moomiyo) is an ingredient traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Like mud, mumio owes its properties to its high content of humic acids. These are organic humic substances produced by the decomposition of plant matter and are a component of fossil fuels such as coal or oil. Mumio ointment, rich in the aforementioned humic acids and, in particular, in the valuable fulvic acid, may prove useful . This substance stimulates cell renewal through its action, for example, by accelerating the synthesis of calcium and phosphorus, the main building blocks of our bones.

Mumio ointment can also be used to care for particularly demanding skin, such as skin prone to irritation or those with visible calluses or bedsores. The ingredients in mumio stimulate blood microcirculation, which in turn accelerates epidermal cell renewal and thus helps combat dryness.
