In addition to olive and rapeseed oil, other valuable fats, especially cold-pressed ones, are increasingly appearing in our kitchens. Among them is sesame oil – with its deep, golden color and distinctive aroma.
Cold-pressed sesame oil is a product that should not be missing from your pantry, but also from your cosmetic bag. Thanks to its rich content of valuable ingredients, it is nutritious and perfectly complements the flavor of exotic dishes—while also being ideal for daily skin, hair, and nail care.
Sesame oil – health properties
Valuable fats are essential in our daily diet. They should be present in every meal. However, it's worth consuming a wide variety of them. Unrefined sesame oil has several health benefits . It is valuable for the body primarily due to its content:
- Antioxidants (sesamin and sesamolin),
- B vitamins,
- Vitamins A, D, E, K,
- Coenzymes,
- Polyphenolic compounds
- Sterols,
- Minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc , copper, manganese, iron or phosphorus),
- Omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids.
A serving of sesame oil also provides the body with trace amounts of protein and fiber, so it's worth including in a balanced breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner. Its regular inclusion in the diet can positively contribute to cholesterol regulation and the proper functioning of the circulatory system.
Sesame oil – Use in the kitchen
High-quality sesame oil is used in cooking, primarily as an additive for cooking, braising, and frying. It is used for this purpose in Chinese and Indian dishes.
However, keep in mind that the smoke point of cold-pressed (i.e., unrefined) sesame oil is 177°C. For comparison, the smoke point of clarified butter is 220°C. This means that sesame oil is not suitable for deep-frying, but it is perfectly suitable for frying.
Cold-pressed sesame oil, on the other hand, is best used for cold dishes, such as salads, sauces, dips, pastes, or as a garnish for ready meals. This way, it retains its full properties. Its intense, nutty flavor pairs perfectly with dishes inspired by Asian cuisine.
Sesame oil for skin and hair – a natural cosmetic
The oil pressed from sesame seeds was and is used, like other oils, for body care.
Sesame oil can be used on the skin, for example, for massage, makeup removal, or to complete an evening skincare routine (creating an occlusive layer on the skin). This type of oil is heavier—its consistency is thick and even slightly sticky. This allows it to adhere well to the skin's surface and protect it from excessive moisture loss.
- For this reason, sesame oil is recommended for wrinkles and for the care of mature, dull, and pale skin.
Some of the oil can also be spread over the hair. Moisturized strands can be covered with conditioner, or the oil can be applied directly to the scalp and the entire length of the hair.
- high porosity (with a strong tendency to curl) as well as hair damaged and brittle by styling.
Thanks to its antioxidant and soothing properties, sesame oil can also be used as a mouthwash to accelerate the healing of minor wounds. Its high mineral and antioxidant content supports cell regeneration and renewal.
