In 1912, Kazimierz Funk, a Polish biochemist, introduced the term vitamin into the dictionary. He was the first to isolate thiamine, or vitamin B1, from rice bran. Today we'll look at another vitamin with extremely valuable properties: biotin, a B vitamin – vitamin B7. Biotin's properties are extremely valuable and have a positive effect on skin, hair, and nails.

What is biotin ?

Biotin is nothing more than an organic compound. It is found in both plant and animal tissue. It is a water-soluble vitamin. Its main purpose is to influence the proper functioning of carboxylases, i.e., enzymes necessary for the proper functioning of many biochemical reactions important to the body. It participates, among other things, in the process of glucose formation, fatty acid synthesis, and the citric acid cycle. In addition, it supports the function of the thyroid gland. It also influences the proper functioning of the skin and the improved appearance of hair.

What properties does biotin have?

Because biotin is a vitamin, it is essential for the proper functioning of our bodies. Its health-promoting properties are quite broad, and it's worth learning about them. Taking vitamin B7 can significantly improve nail hardness and eliminate the tendency to split. Biotin is also important for our skin. Vitamin B7 deficiency can cause various skin changes, such as rashes or psoriasis. Therefore, it seems sensible to ensure the correct amount of biotin in the body.

Biotin is also known to maintain healthy hair. People deficient in this vitamin may find their hair less durable and even begin to fall out.

Biotin is extremely important for pregnant and breastfeeding women. During these periods, women are at risk of vitamin deficiency. This is due to its faster breakdown during pregnancy.

Biotin – where should we look for it?

Biotin is naturally found in many foods. The most well-known and easily accessible are:

  • Sea fish,
  • Egg yolk,
  • Dairy,
  • Fruits and vegetables such as cauliflower, avocados or sweet potatoes,
  • Meat,
  • Offal,
  • Nuts , seeds.

Biotin is also available in a convenient form as a dietary supplement. Pullulan supplements, which are obtained through a natural fermentation process and do not use any animal-derived raw materials, are also an excellent option for vegetarians and vegans.
