Green-lipped mussel ( Perna canaliculus ), also known as the New Zealand green mussel, is an endemic species found only off the coast of New Zealand. Available as a supplement, this mussel contains valuable nutrients and has a positive effect on our health and well-being, especially on our joints.

Compared to other mussels, the mussel looks quite distinctive due to its intense green color and its size. The largest specimens grow up to 24 centimeters. Green-lipped mussels have been an important part of the Maori diet for many generations. It turns out that the indigenous people of New Zealand suffer almost exclusively from joint and spinal disorders thanks to this green mussel, which is rich in valuable nutrients. It contains, among other things, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as amino sugars and uronic acid, which are responsible for, among other things, the rebuilding of synovial fluid and cartilage, a deficiency of which leads to increased susceptibility of joints to damage. In addition, the green-lipped mussel contains:
• unsaturated omega-3 acids,
• Phospholipids,
• Sterols.
• Vitamins A, C, D, E and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12,
• Elements and minerals such as:
• Silica (which affects the structure of connective tissue and improves bone density),
• Iron,
• Calcium carbonate,
• Iodine,
• Zinc,
• Phosphorus,
• Selenium,
• Potassium.

Characteristics of the New Zealand green mussel

Regular consumption of New Zealand green mussel extract helps relieve symptoms caused by, among others, rheumatoid arthritis and joint degeneration. This dietary supplement also has a positive effect on improving joint mobility, relieving muscle pain, possessing anti-inflammatory properties and reducing swelling. It effectively supports the regeneration of joints that are constantly exposed to various stresses, especially in people who actively participate in sports, perform physical labor, or struggle with obesity.
Green-lipped mussel also helps accelerate recovery from injuries. This unique extract is used not only for the treatment but also for the prevention of osteoporosis, as well as in the treatment of asthmatics, as it improves respiratory parameters. In summary, it is recommended for athletes and people with the following conditions, among others:

Interestingly, New Zealand mussel extract is obtained through a special and rather complex process that allows the mussel's health benefits to be preserved. Heat treatment is strictly avoided in this process, as it negatively affects the extract's natural values ​​and destroys its health-promoting properties.
Products containing green-lipped mussel extract are available in capsules, ointments, and balms. For recurring back or spinal pain, ointments and balms are recommended, which are particularly effective when massaged. The balm with green-lipped mussel pulp extract helps combat osteoarthritis and rebuild cartilage tissue. After application, a cooling effect initially develops, which then turns into a pleasant warming sensation. It can be applied to the back, arms, hips, or knees. Because the balm also contains plant extracts, it also nourishes the skin and improves its elasticity.

Contraindications to the use of New Zealand green mussels

Products containing green-lipped mussel extract are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. New Zealand green mussels are strictly prohibited for people with a seafood allergy. Tablets, balms, and ointments made from mussels are of animal origin and therefore not suitable for consumption by vegans or people who consume exclusively animal products.

Are there any side effects when using preparations containing green-lipped mussel extract?

The external application of ointments and balms containing green-lipped mussel extract does not cause any side effects. Taking dietary supplements containing green-lipped mussel is harmless. Very rarely, digestive problems such as heartburn, diarrhea, or nausea may occur. In such cases, the dosage of the product should be reduced, and if symptoms persist, the product should be discontinued.
