Dates are the drupes of the date palm. Date trees grow in large clumps and have been cultivated for 8,000 years. They are currently grown in Asia, the southern United States and North Africa. They are native to the Middle East and there are over a hundred species of palm trees. The name derives from the Greek word "daktulos".
This fruit is a source of fiber, vitamin B3, potassium, carotenoids, phenolic acid, salicylates and antioxidants. They are found fresh, dried, in syrup, flour and sugar.
