Ground Ceylon cinnamon is an extremely popular spice, valued not only for its pleasant aroma but also for its valuable health-promoting properties. Since it is one of the basic ingredients of traditional medicine, many scientists have studied the effects of this product on the functioning of the human body. Ceylon cinnamon is even on the list of natural remedies (HMPC - Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Scientific research shows that cinnamon bark contains up to 4% essential oils including cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, eugenol, b-caryophyllene and linalool. Other biologically active substances include cinnamic acid and phenolic acid. Literature data also indicate the presence of many vitamins in cinnamon, such as thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and beta-carotene (vitamin A precursor). The bark of this plant also contains the following minerals: calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium and zinc.
The compounds in Ceylon cinnamon have also been tested for their antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is believed that this spice can act as a natural preservative to keep food fresher for longer due to the presence of cinnamaldehyde.
