Oregano, or more specifically marigold, is a herb mainly used as a spice. It is most popular as an accompaniment to dishes, and few people know that, in addition to its characteristic aroma, it has many valuable properties for our health. The first reports of using oregano not only as a spice come from ancient Rome and Greece. The leaves were used as compresses on the muscles and oregano oil was taken to boost immunity.
Oregano improves digestive processes by increasing salivary and gastric acid secretion and relieving indigestion. Oregano has expectorant properties, it also has diuretic, choleretic and digestive properties.
Oregano herb contains phenols such as carvacrol and thymol, phenolic acids, flavonoids, phytosterols and catechins. It also contains minerals such as magnesium, zinc, potassium, iron and calcium. It also contains vitamins like vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, A, E, K and folic acid. In addition, thanks to the content of flavonoids, the oil increases the absorption of vitamins in the body. The combination of flavonoids and phytosterols, on the other hand, affects the proper functioning of the upper respiratory tract.
