Capsaicin – what properties does it have and in which products can it be found?
Contents:
Capsaicin , a natural compound produced by plants to ward off herbivores, is responsible for the burning, spicy flavor of chilies, habanero peppers, and some spices. Capsaicin is often used in weight-loss supplements, but beyond its ability to accelerate fat burning, it has other valuable properties, and its uses are far more versatile than we might think.
Properties of burning capsaicin
Capsaicin is an alkaloid naturally occurring in some plants whose most distinctive characteristic is an extremely pungent, burning taste. It dissolves in alcohol and fats. So, if we want to get rid of the burning sensation after eating chili peppers, we can drink a glass of whole milk. The natural source of capsaicin is:
Cayenne pepper and especially hot peppers such as:
- chili ,
- Habanero,
- Piri Piri,
- Jalapeno .
Paprika does not contain capsaicin. This substance is also found in warming ointments, slimming products, painkillers (including pain patches), and even cosmetics, such as lip glosses, which smooth and enlarge the lips through gentle irritation. This irritating, burning, and unpleasant substance has an analgesic effect because, when used for extended periods, it does not stimulate pain receptors but causes a state of deactivation of the pain receptors, which are no longer stimulated despite the stimulus. Capsaicin is not believed to have analgesic properties and is recommended for use, for example, to relieve accompanying pain:
- Shingles,
- Changes in the musculoskeletal system,
- diabetic neuropathy,
- Rash or peeling.
In addition, capsaicin is valued for its effects:
- Antioxidant,
- Delaying the development of arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease,
- antimicrobial,
- antiparasitic,
- antihypertensive, i.e. blood pressure lowering,
- Supports thermoregulation and fat burning,
- Appetite suppressant.
Precautions
Both when consuming hot peppers and using capsaicin-containing patches, one should be very careful and, due to their irritating properties, try to avoid contact with the eyes or open wounds. Capsaicin can have toxic effects in excessive concentrations and impair the proper functioning of the neurological system. Capsaicin can be used in the form of cayenne pepper extract as a dietary supplement to support the weight loss process, especially if you don't like spicy foods. However, the dosage recommended by the manufacturer must be strictly adhered to. However, you should avoid capsaicin if you:
- People suffering from reflux and stomach ulcers,
- pregnant and breastfeeding women,
- Children.
