Our body's hormone levels can have a significant impact on our well-being. There comes a time in every adult woman's life when ovarian hormonal activity declines and estrogen levels drop significantly. This typically occurs around age 50, although it's such an individual issue that this threshold can shift. Of course, we're talking about menopause. During this time, fluctuations in hormone levels can severely impact our mental and physical state.

Menopausal symptoms

Signs of impending menopause can be very annoying and not necessarily pleasant. At this time, the risk of osteoporosis, as well as cardiovascular and urinary tract diseases, increases. A decrease in estrogen levels can manifest itself in a whole range of symptoms of varying severity, for example:

  • Irritability,
  • panic attacks,
  • palpitations,
  • hot flashes,
  • sleep disorders,
  • weight gain,
  • increased sweating (so-called night sweats),
  • feel constantly tired.

Natural methods to relieve menopause symptoms

Menopausal symptoms can significantly impact a woman's quality of life and affect her social relationships or productivity at work. For women with particularly distressing menopausal symptoms, doctors typically recommend low-dose hormone replacement therapy. Natural herbs rich in phytoestrogens—compounds similar to natural estrogens that can bind to estrogen receptors—have been proven effective for years and can be used to support the relief of menopausal symptoms. Herbs help relieve the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. They can contain three groups of phytoestrogens:

  • Isoflavones,
  • lignans,
  • cumestans.

Herbs to relieve menopausal symptoms

During menopause, it is worth taking natural herbal preparations containing extracts from the following plants:

  • Chasteberry – helps regulate hormone, estrogen, progesterone and prolactin levels, which helps reduce mood swings and irritability,
  • Red clover – contains isoflavones, which help relieve hot flashes and unpleasant mood swings. It supports the function of the circulatory system and increases the elasticity of blood vessels.
  • Lemon balm – helps with sleep disorders, calms, soothes and makes it easier to fall asleep,
  • Black cohosh root – a plant containing isoflavones and triterpene glycosides. It is recommended for conditions such as excessive sweating and hot flashes.

During menopause, you can support the body with whole herbal compositions in the form of infusions, teas, or dietary supplements. For example, the herbal composition may include red clover, which relieves hot flashes, sweating, irritability, and anxiety, with the addition of lemon balm, which has a calming effect, and hawthorn, which regulates the heart and has a positive relaxing and soothing effect.

To ensure that the menopause period runs as smoothly as possible and avoids unpleasant symptoms, it is important to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle during this time. In addition to introducing supportive herbs into your daily diet, it is also worth paying attention to wholesome, healthy, and regular meals, as well as exercising, for example, in the form of yoga and walking.
