CONTENTS

Yarrow herb, or more accurately, yarrow, is a versatile plant. It can be used as a remedy for digestive problems, but not only. Due to the fact that it is a widespread herb, it is quite well known and researched. Folk medicine has used it for many centuries to accelerate wound healing and also to disinfect them. But what is the true purpose of this popular herb, and what does it actually help with? We invite you to read this text.

Yarrow – a handful of knowledge

Yarrow belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae). Other names for this plant, according to folk tales, include milfoil, yarrow chrysanthemum, and also common yarrow. It is widespread throughout the world, and its main habitat is Europe, Asia, and America. In Poland, however, it is most often found in fallow lands, meadows, and forests of all kinds, but it can also be found in home gardens. It forms numerous and branched roots from which grow a large number of pinnate leaves. Then a one-meter-tall stem appears, which ends in an inflorescence. Yarrow blooms from July to October and exudes a very special fragrance. It is worth mentioning that the plant raw material in this case is dried leaves, but also dried inflorescences. An interesting fact may be that yarrow was already known in ancient times. According to applications, it was used to treat hemorrhoids, and Hippocrates himself mentioned it.

Yarrow – the nutritional content

The spectrum of effects of yarrow herb is not without reason so broad. This is due to the wide, yet diverse range of chemical compounds it contains. It is worth paying attention to the essential oils, which also account for many of yarrow's health-promoting properties. They contain many substances. Examples include chamazulene and flavonoids, which include apigenin glycosides, quercetin, and luteolin. It also contains various tannins, coumarins, formic acid, and salicylic acid. Also worth mentioning is its high content of choline, minerals, and various vitamins. We find zinc, copper, iron, and sulfur in it. As for vitamins, it is a good source of vitamins A, C, and K.

Yarrow herb – influence on the digestive system

Among the broad spectrum of effects of yarrow herb, its effect on our digestive system is comprehensive. In addition to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, an infusion of this plant can positively influence digestive processes. This is due to its improved intestinal peristalsis and increased bile secretion. This is due to its diastolic effect on the bile ducts, as well as on the smooth muscles of the intestines and ureters. It also relieves all types of inflammation, both in the stomach and intestines. In addition, yarrow infusion can relieve flatulence, constipation, and nausea. It is also suitable as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy for gastric ulcers or hemorrhoids. A decoction of yarrow flowers can minimize the permeability of the digestive system and block excessive histamine release.

Yarrow for various wounds and inflammations

An interesting fact is that yarrow owes its name to its hemostatic properties, which apply to both external and internal bleeding. Yarrow herb oil itself has long been added to all kinds of creams and ointments for healing wounds or burns. It also has antiseptic, astringent, and antihypertensive properties. These are largely due to the tannins and resins contained in the plant. It can also boost the body's immunity, especially after various injuries. It can also be used in the form of an infusion to combat sore throats or gum infections. It is also used for severe coughing, conjunctivitis, or excessive tear production. Interestingly, it can also be used for chest rubs in cases of colds and flu.

Bloodstone for women

Yarrow has long been known to be a woman's friend. A study was even conducted on a group of women to investigate its properties for relieving menstrual pain. The study involved a group of female students, one of whom took yarrow herb and the other a placebo. The dosage was based on taking an extract of this plant for three days, three doses per day during menstruation. It was clearly shown that yarrow made a significant contribution to reducing the intensity of these pain complaints. But that's not the end of the positive news. Yarrow can be an effective remedy for chronic inflammation of the posterior parametrium, a condition that causes severe pain in the nervous system. Yarrow extract, on the other hand, can have antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the bitter substances it contains have a tonic effect. Yarrow oil can also be added to the bandage, which is an excellent solution for women struggling with disorders of the reproductive organs. It can also relieve common symptoms of menopause and support the treatment of inflammation of the vagina, uterus, and ovaries.

Yarrow – support for the kidneys

Yarrow herb also acts as a support for the kidneys and the entire excretory system. Numerous studies have proven that a solution of this plant and ethanol can increase urine production. Furthermore, it facilitates the excretion of more sodium, potassium, and unhealthy oxalates. In the control group, which did not take yarrow extracts, nitric oxide levels increased significantly. This is a chemical compound that contributes to the formation of urinary tract bleeding and kidney disease. According to scientists, yarrow can support the treatment and prevention of kidney stones, but this theory has yet to be confirmed.

Yarrow herb – influence on the cardiovascular system

The use of yarrow for various cardiovascular disorders originates from folk medicine. To date, its effectiveness in this area has not been fully confirmed. However, recent research suggests that this plant may indeed have a positive effect on the heart itself and the entire circulatory system. It has been found that yarrow herb extract can stimulate the proliferation of smooth muscle cells and lower blood pressure. Of particular importance here is a compound called artemetin. It belongs to the group of flavonoids and was isolated from yarrow. It reduces the action of enzymes that increase blood pressure. Other studies have shown that yarrow extract itself may have a relaxing effect on the coronary arteries, as well as the bronchi. Due to this property, it could be used in the future to treat hypertension and asthma.

Effect of yarrow herb on the central nervous system

Yarrow also has a significant impact on central nervous system functions. However, it should be noted that research in this direction has so far only been conducted on rats. The aim was to investigate the plant's anxiolytic properties. The rodents were administered a water-alcohol solution based on yarrow herb for a period of 25 days. It was shown to protect against the drug without reducing rodent activity. However, the research itself is still in its infancy, and more time is needed to fully explore the effects of yarrow on the central nervous system. However, the results are already promising.

Yarrow herb – contraindications for use

Yarrow is a relatively safe herb. However, there are a few things to keep in mind for safe use. First, pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children under 12 years of age, should avoid using it. This is due to the plant's rather strong effects. Yarrow should never be consumed raw for internal use. Infusions, tinctures, and other remedies containing yarrow should only be used after appropriate prior treatment. In extreme cases, yarrow can also cause allergic reactions. Therefore, it is not recommended for allergy sufferers. While they can use it, they should consult a doctor first.

Summary

Bloodstone has truly exceptional properties. It's a typical plant for folk medicine. However, keep in mind that not all of its effects have been fully confirmed by scientific research. Nevertheless, it's worth making a place for it in your medicine cabinet. Its wide range of activities and relative safety of use are undoubtedly its advantages.
