Potassium nitrate is an oxidizing agent. Therefore, its primary application was the production of black powder. Currently, it is used in pyrotechnics as an oxidizing agent, including for generating photoflashes—short, very bright pulses of light produced by the combustion of a mixture of nitrate and metal dust. When mixed with a saccharide such as sucrose in stoichiometric proportions and melted, it forms a flammable substance (known as caramel or toffee) with a flash point of approximately 400°C, reaching temperatures of 600°C, and producing copious amounts of smoke.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, potassium nitrate was used to produce nitric acid.

Today it is mainly used to produce potassium nitrite, for nitration

Potassium nitrate mixed with sugar or powdered sugar is the basic fuel component (oxidizer) in handmade pyrotechnics. It also acts as a fertilizer and preservative.
