Medicinal plants are predominantly found in the wild. Sometimes we can even grow them in our gardens or at home. However, sometimes they are closer to us than we think. Angina was once a very popular houseplant. Its distinctive appearance and citrus scent were and still are a great addition to any interior. It's worth noting that it's valuable for more than just these reasons. It possesses a number of health-promoting properties that are definitely worth appreciating. In addition, many consider it one of the most valuable medicinal plants. How can angina help us? We invite you to read on.
Angina pectoris – what exactly is it?
Angina pectoris is nothing other than the well-known scented geranium. It is also called geranium. It belongs to the Geranium family and is native to North Africa. Over time, it spread to other parts of the continent. Currently, it is a well-known and popular potted and ornamental plant. It is worth noting that virtually all varieties are hybrids. It is very difficult to determine which variety they originate from, yet they possess many health-promoting properties. Growing this plant is not too demanding due to its high resistance to environmental influences. It does not require special soil, but it should be ensured that it is relatively well-drained. It is worth providing it with sufficient sunlight, as this will not only promote more shoots, but also intensify its characteristic citrus scent. This plant also does not like overwatering. It typically grows to about 100 centimeters tall and, interestingly, has irregular flowering periods. Angina leaves are used as an essential ingredient in folk medicine. Various infusions were prepared from this herb, which were used to treat upper respiratory tract infections. Interestingly, fresh and crushed geranium leaves were also used directly on the skin and for various middle ear infections.
Angina pectoris contains health-promoting substances
Although a sore throat herb doesn't contain a very broad spectrum of chemical compounds, its high concentration makes its health-promoting properties quite potent. Geranium leaves are rich in vitamin C and essential oils, including geraniol, which gives them their characteristic scent. In addition, we find plenty of flavonoids, tannins, and various organic acids.
Angina pectoris in colds and various infections
Sore throat oil is characterized by its powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Therefore, it can be used as a remedy for various infections, including colds and flu. It also has decongestant properties, which can ease breathing by acting on the nasal mucosa. Its warming and soothing properties are also worth mentioning. As a result, it can improve your well-being and help you relax. This oil can also be successfully used for inhalation. To do this, add a few drops of geranium essential oil to a pot of boiling water. Then, cover your head with a towel and lean over the solution at a safe distance. You can also add a few drops of the oil to your bath. This not only promotes relaxation but also has a positive effect on your skin.
Angina pectoris against earache and more
Due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, geranium leaves have long been used as a remedy for ear infections. Using geranium leaves for this purpose is incredibly simple. Simply roll up the leaf and gently insert it into the sore ear. It's important to do this delicately, taking care not to insert it too deeply, as this can damage the eardrum. Geranium leaves work very quickly, relieving both pain and swelling in about a dozen minutes. They can also accelerate the healing of areas affected by inflammation. It's also worth noting that geraniums are also effective for arthritis, rheumatic pain, and swelling. To do this, massage a small amount of angina oil directly into the sore area.
Fragrant geranium – insect control and air quality impact
The pleasant citrus scent of scented geraniums not only enhances our well-being but also helps control insects. It's no coincidence that this plant has become so common in our homes. Its scent effectively repels mosquitoes and flies, significantly reducing the likelihood of their presence in a home or apartment. Furthermore, the essential oils contained in geraniums can significantly improve indoor air quality and much more. It acts perfectly as a natural air freshener, increasing oxygen quality while reducing carbon dioxide levels. Furthermore, it can effectively cleanse it of all kinds of contaminants, thus improving, among other things, health and sleep quality.
Geranium – influence on blood pressure
Hypertension, along with many other cardiovascular diseases, is undoubtedly the scourge of our time. This applies to both the elderly and the young. Geranium has antihypertensive, relaxing, and calming properties. An infusion of this plant will be perfect for this role. However, keep in mind that if you are diagnosed with hypertension, it's worth consulting a doctor first. Interestingly, despite its relaxing effect, geranium does not have a narcotic effect, as is sometimes the case with these types of preparations.
Angina in cosmetics
Due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, sore throat herb is used in the production of some cosmetics. It is used as an ingredient in soaps, body lotions, and antiperspirants. It also has a preservative effect. For this reason, it is added to many cosmetic products – it increases their shelf life and imparts an original citrus scent.
Other uses of angina pectoris
Preparations containing angina pectoris are sometimes used as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy for diabetes. They can slightly lower blood sugar levels. It can also be used to accelerate the healing of minor wounds, scratches, and abrasions. Interestingly, it can also flatten scars and slightly reduce their visibility. It is also perfect for relieving burning and itching caused by insect bites. It is also worth mentioning that geranium leaves can help eliminate bad breath. They also have a positive effect on the condition of our teeth and gums.
Contraindications to the use of preparations containing geraniums
Fragrant geranium is a relatively safe plant. However, it's important to note that it can cause allergies, so it's not recommended for allergy sufferers. If this reaction occurs, it can cause a rash, burning sensation on the skin, and swelling. It's important to note that the irritation can be caused by the smell alone. However, if you're unsure, it's worth conducting an allergy test. To do this, apply some infusion or oil to your skin. If no adverse effects occur after about 30 minutes, you can safely use it. It's very important not to use geranium preparations while taking contraceptives. Due to its estrogen-stimulating effect, it can interact with them. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children under six, should also avoid geraniums.
Scented geranium, also known as fragrant geranium, is a plant with many uses. On the one hand, it will certainly make an attractive decoration for our home, and on the other, it will act as a remedy for many ailments. Keep in mind, however, that it is not a medicine. This does not change the fact that it contains active ingredients, and therefore, one should not overdo it with the dosage—especially when used internally. If you have any doubts about its safe use, consult your doctor.
