Dry air in rooms is often caused by systematic heating. This phenomenon becomes particularly problematic in winter, when the outside temperature drops below zero and we turn on radiators, heaters, or underfloor heating. The heating season brings with it the problem of excessively dry air. The lack of adequate humidification in the room and the simultaneous operation of the radiators at full power lead to the air around us becoming extremely dry. What are the consequences? These include chronic coughs and sinus pain. Constant fluctuations in temperature and humidity promote colds and make it difficult to effectively fight off viral infections.
What effects does dry air have on our health?
Dry air at home makes us uncomfortable – our clothes become more electrified, our hair becomes dry and frizzy, our hands become rough, and our facial skin feels unpleasantly tight. Too little humidity in the air also affects our well-being and even our health, leading to:
• Drying of the mucous membranes, which can lead to a scratchy feeling in the throat,
• excessive dryness of the skin, which becomes sensitive, itchy and sometimes even cracks,
• increased amount of dust, which can intensify allergic reactions in allergy sufferers,
• Increased risk of infection or colds – especially if the temperature difference between home, workplace and outside temperature is significant.
How do you ensure optimal indoor humidity in autumn and winter?
For the temperature to have a positive effect on our well-being, it should not exceed 23°C in rooms where we move during the day, while 18-20°C is sufficient in the bedroom. Humidity should remain at 40-60%. So, how do you achieve the right humidity and effectively combat dry air in your home? Here are some proven methods:• Optimal use of the radiator – High temperatures, i.e., temperatures above 24°C, can lead to discomfort and shortness of breath. To regularly monitor and control the temperature level, it is recommended to install a thermometer in your home. This will help create a comfortable atmosphere at home. It is always better to turn down the heating, put on an extra sweater, and warm slippers than to stay in an overheated room in your summer clothes.
• A container of water – However, when temperatures drop below zero and the use of the radiator becomes necessary, it's worth hanging a special ceramic container filled with water on it, which will humidify the dry air through evaporation. You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the container, which will give the room a pleasant fragrance and provide aromatherapy.
• Potted plants as natural humidifiers – they not only add an aesthetic element to the interior, but also have the ability to release a significant amount of moisture from previously collected water. They also act as effective filters, absorbing harmful toxins from the air. It's worth having pots of ficus, fern, ivy, schefflera, dieffenbachia, or palm trees in your space. Potted plants with large, spreading, yet thin leaves are the most effective.
• Regularly ventilate rooms – Regularly ventilating rooms is crucial for maintaining adequate humidity in the home. Regardless of the weather conditions, it is advisable to open the window for a few minutes every day, even several times a day. It is very important to avoid situations in which the room feels stuffy. Taking care of proper air circulation in our environment has a significant impact on our health and well-being. Opening the window several times a day can remove dirt and other pollutants that can accumulate in enclosed spaces. In addition, fresh air brings new energy into the interior, which can have a positive effect on our concentration and general well-being.
• Drying clothes – one of our grandmothers' methods for maintaining humidity in the room is hanging clothes. The steam released from wet clothes increases humidity. It's a good idea to choose natural and safe detergents that don't contain harmful substances, such as soap flakes or eco-friendly washing powders .
• Humidifiers – Humidifiers can help maintain the right humidity level in a room. It's best to choose a multifunctional device that not only humidifies the air but also eliminates unpleasant odors. Additionally, with the addition of essential oils, the humidifier is perfect for natural aromatherapy.
Caring for the air quality in our environment should become an important part of our daily routine. Humidified air not only contributes to maintaining healthy skin but also effectively prevents excessive drying of the mucous membranes. This will significantly improve our daily well-being and health. Even when the weather outside is difficult, whether it's raining or snowing, it's worth making airing your home a regular habit.
