Green coffee beans are unroasted seeds. While they don't have as intense an aroma as roasted coffee, the lack of heat treatment allows green beans to retain their full beneficial properties for the human body.
Green ground coffee is often touted as a superfood, primarily as a product that is said to promote weight loss. Such a claim is unfortunately somewhat exaggerated, but it is true that green coffee stimulates the metabolism and also provides the body with many valuable nutrients, including a large dose of antioxidants.
This is how ground green coffee should be brewed and what benefits drinking it regularly can have for your body.
Green ground coffee and its properties in practice
Green ground coffee differs from traditional roasted coffee primarily in its flavor. It is definitely more delicate and slightly acidic, although the flavor of the brewed coffee can be influenced by factors such as brewing time or additives.
The main benefit of fresh, unroasted coffee is its high content of chlorogenic acid, a natural antioxidant that reduces the effects of free radicals on cells. Thanks to this, it is recognized that healthy ground green coffee can have several times greater antioxidant properties than green tea or cayenne pepper (also known for protecting cells from oxidative stress). Chlorogenic acid also limits the absorption of sugar during digestion and helps lower blood sugar levels. In addition, the substance also has bactericidal properties and supports the immune system.
- It is also worth mentioning that the effect of chlorogenic acid is enhanced when combined with caffeine - which is naturally also found in green coffee beans (it stimulates as strongly as roasted coffee).
For this reason, ground green coffee is a great choice as a sipping beverage or even before breakfast. Coffee gradually stimulates and accelerates metabolism, which is especially important for people who want to lose excess weight.
How to brew green coffee
The process of brewing green beans is not complicated, but it is worth getting a brewer with a tamper, a filter, or an aeropress beforehand to easily separate the coffee grounds.
- The basic amount is 2-3 teaspoons per cup (150-200 ml of water). Pour slightly cooled boiling water over the beans to preserve the coffee's flavor. Brewing takes about 3 minutes, after which the coffee grounds should be separated from the brew.
With a little practice, you can adjust the proportions and extend the brewing time as desired. It is recommended not to drink more than three cups of coffee per day.
- Green coffee beans are very hard, so they could damage your home grinder. The best way to prepare them is to grind the required amount in a mortar and pestle just before brewing. A more convenient option is ground green coffee.
How do you determine the quality of coffee beans?
The quality of coffee can be determined by its roasting. Burnt beans may indicate that the manufacturer is trying to conceal the defects of the poor-quality raw material. Green coffee is delivered to the consumer seemingly unaltered—but this doesn't always guarantee its high quality. Which type of coffee should you choose?
Green coffee, whether ground or in beans, should have appropriate labeling that provides information about the coffee variety, the country and region of production, and the certification. The more information about a particular product and its origin, the better—so it's worth analyzing the labels carefully.
