CONTENTS

Acorn coffee , or simply acorns, and formerly partisan coffee—these are the names given to an increasingly popular beverage made from autumn-ripening oak berries. (Note that acorns are edible only after heat treatment; raw oak berries are inedible.) This aromatic, slightly spicy drink is a substitute for regular coffee. Unlike a small black coffee, it contains no caffeine, but instead contains a number of valuable minerals. Today, it is appreciated primarily by lovers of healthy and organic food, but acorn coffee was already known in the 19th century. During World War II, during the occupation, when regular coffee was unavailable, people drank acorn vodka, which they made themselves by roasting acorns in the kitchen, grinding them in a mill, and pouring boiling water over them. Hence the name "partisan coffee."

  • How to prepare acorn coffee

Acorn coffee is available in health food stores and organic shops. Typically, this coffee contains over 95% acorns, with the rest being spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, or cloves. There are two ways to brew it. A simpler option is to put two teaspoons of the powder into a mug or cup, pour boiling water over it, and wait about 10 minutes for the coffee to brew properly. However, for a more intense flavor and aroma, you can brew acorns like traditional Turkish coffee, i.e., in a small pot. Add acorns along with spices (e.g., cardamom, cinnamon) and with or without sugar, depending on your preference. Pour cold water over low heat and wait until it starts to boil and a fluffy foam forms on the surface. Żołodziówka can be drunk neat or, depending on your preference, with additives such as milk, sugar, honey, cinnamon, ginger, or vanilla.
