Not just tofu: vegan dairy products
Even though the words “vegan” and “dairy” should seemingly never appear in the same sentence, plant-based cuisine is actually rich in products that imitate traditional dairy products of animal origin and are in no way inferior to them in terms of taste, consistency or culinary uses.
In one of our tips, we presented you with an overview of plant milks made from various types of seeds, nuts, grains, and legumes: from spelt to almonds to the ever-popular soybeans. You can buy many of these in our organic shop – and in various varieties! However, the possibilities for creating vegan alternatives to dairy products don't end with plant milk: In fact, you could say that there is no popular dairy product that doesn't have a plant-based counterpart. Here are some of them!
vegetable oil
To start with, perhaps the most controversial of the products on our list. Why the controversy? Isn't plant-based butter simply the most common margarine in the world? Yes and no! Most commercially available margarines contain milk fat, making them non-vegan. Purely plant-based butter—for example, the Alsan butter available in our organic store—is partly made with palm oil, which is extracted contrary to the vegan worldview. Many vegans forgo it altogether in favor of unrefined coconut oil—but this is notoriously similar to butter in neither taste nor consistency...
Soy yogurt and more
We'd bet you that you wouldn't be able to tell soy or coconut fruit yogurt from one made with cow's milk just by the taste! These multi-flavored soy fruit yogurts are a true vegan indulgence. Their texture isn't at all different from the one we love so much about traditional yogurt. Definitely worth a try!
Tofu : the star among plant-based cheeses
Ah, tofu. A true vegan classic and the butt of countless jokes. Does it deserve it? Definitely not (well, maybe a little)! While natural, unseasoned tofu, just out of the package, definitely has a taste that might not appeal to everyone (or, as the nasty people say, it has no taste at all, just a slightly rubbery texture...), properly seasoned and prepared, it can replace many products: from meat to eggs and, of course, cheese!
With tofu, you can bake a cheesecake, make a vegan version of scrambled eggs ("tofu cake"), and prepare delicious skewers. Its neutral, slightly soy flavor is its advantage, not its disadvantage: Tofu absorbs aromas and flavors from spices like a sponge, allowing it to take on a completely different character depending on your needs and individual preferences!
