Oregano extract, we learn about the health-promoting properties of the popular spice
Oregano is commonly known throughout the world as oregano, an aromatic spice that enhances the taste and aroma of any dish. However, not everyone knows that oregano also has amazing health benefits. The oil extracted from the leaves of the marjoram plant contains compounds that can improve the functioning of the entire body, and its beneficial effects have been valued since ancient times in Mediterranean countries.
Oregano oil - properties
Oregano is a widespread plant found throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is found everywhere in Poland and is commonly called "wild marjoram." It turns out that the leaf extract of this unassuming, widespread, and common plant contains valuable minerals, vitamins, and nutrients such as:
- Flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin,
- Thymol oil,
- Carvacrol,
- tannins,
- Acids: coffee, rosemary and ursol,
- phytosterols,
- Vitamins A, C, E and K,
- B vitamins,
- Folic acid,
- Potassium, selenium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and zinc.
Oregano oil has antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. It helps strengthen the immune system and supports the proper functioning of the liver and digestive tract. It is therefore recommended for preventative use, especially in winter, during periods of increased susceptibility to colds or flu. It is important to note that the oil cannot be consumed directly; instead, the amount of drops recommended by the manufacturer and indicated on the package should be diluted in a glass of water. The oil prepared in this way can be consumed for one week, after which it is best to take a break for a few days.
Oregano oil – what it helps against
This oil is used as an aid mainly for such complaints as:
- food poisoning,
- Digestive problems and flatulence,
- Headaches and toothaches,
- Mycoses and infections of the digestive system, such as Candida albicans, Helicobacteria pylori or E. coli poisoning,
- Colds and upper respiratory tract infections - helps relieve coughs, facilitates expectoration, reduces nasal swelling in runny noses.
Oregano oil can also be used successfully externally, e.g. for inhalation in cases of severe colds and blocked sinuses, and thanks to its antibacterial properties against skin blemishes such as acne.
Oregano oil - contraindications
Oregano extract is a relatively safe preparation, provided we don't exceed the recommended dosage. When properly diluted or applied directly to the skin, it can be used even by children. Particular attention should be paid to people suffering from chronic digestive diseases. Oregano oil is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
